Cape Disappointment's North Head Lighthouse sits upon a bluff on the southern tip of the Washington coast. The North Head lighthouse was built two miles north of Cape Disappointment and the mouth of the Columbia River. The North Head is one of the windiest locations on the West Coast, so the lighthouse was put into service in 1898 to help guide ships to their destination through rough seas.
